What Motivation Is In Simple Words

George Carlin said wonderful words about books on motivation: “What Motivation Is? Why did everyone suddenly need additional motivation? It’s simple: you either want it or not. What’s the catch? Besides, if you had enough motivation to go to the store and buy this book, maybe you’re already motivated enough? You don’t need the book anymore! Put it back, tell the clerk “Go f *** ing, I’m motivated! I went home.” Thank you, old man, rest in peace, but nevertheless we will analyze this topic a little deeper.

Hello! Let’s go in order. In this article, we will start with the basics – what is motivation and why does a person follow this book. And then, already armed with knowledge, dive into practice and analyze special cases. And all this I will call this: A series of articles on motivation! Sounds cool, right?

What is Motivation?

What does the word “motivation” mean? The meaning of the word (from lat. Movere ) is “ moving ”. In simple words, motivation is a motivation for action , movement. Here’s what old woman Vika says :

Motivation is a psychophysiological process that controls a person’s behavior, sets its direction, organization, activity and stability; human ability to actively satisfy his needs .

Let’s think logically . In order for the motivation to do something to appear, it must become your need, which you will strive to satisfy. You must want this.

Well, there is a need. For example, you want:

  • to eat;
  • dig a hole for cash reward;
  • start preparing for the session in advance.

I think you noticed that the examples are different. Satisfying hunger is a completely natural need that does not require additional motivation. Not everyone will agree to dig a hole, even if money is needed. And with the preparation for the session is still more difficult. That is, there is little need, something else is needed. Let’s figure it out.

Types of Motivation

In psychology, motivation is divided into types according to the following criteria:

  • The source is external and internal motivation.
  • Emotional color – positive and negative motivation.
  • Sustainability is a steady and unsustainable motivation.

Types of motivation are different factors that make you act. The source of motivation determines where it comes from. This is either external circumstances (plans for work, any obligations), or your internal motives and needs. Emotional color – you either get something from the action, or lose something from inaction (dig a hole on time – pay, do not dig – do not pay).

But let’s pay attention to the third view:

Sustainable motivation – based on the natural needs of a person (to eat, sleep);
Unstable motivation – requires constant efforts to support (prepare in advance for the session, find a better job, learn English, blog).

Have you already guessed which one interests us? Of course, unstable, because you can force yourself to eat and sleep without outside help. We need self-motivation – superpower that allows us to find the strength in ourselves to achieve personal goals:

  • Prepare for the session in advance
  • find a job with a more attractive salary
  • or finally learn English.

The paradox is that it can be difficult to find the motivation to do something, even if you want it. “Of course, I would like to, but damn it …” – is this a familiar situation? I would be surprised if not. Therefore, it is called unstable.

Motivation Formula

As we have already found out, the need is not enough. Well, it is necessary and necessary, this is not a reason to get out of your comfort zone and stop procrastinating . The movement begins when the need becomes acute, that is, it becomes a necessity for you:

  • one night remains before the exam,
  • current salary is not enough to pay bills,
  • urgently need to fly to an English-speaking country.

The condition under which motivation appears itself is a necessity (urgent need).

We can derive the motivation formula:

Motivation appears at a time when the pain of inaction becomes stronger than the pain of action.

Of course, you will begin to act when inaction leads to disastrous consequences. You may not have been preparing for the exam, but then you will be expelled. Or you wouldn’t go to work today, but then you will be fined, fired, you will not have money for food, paying bills and all sorts of things. This pain is stronger than the pain from work, so motivation appears.

But such a description of motivation is similar to movement along the stream. If there is an urgent need – we act, no – and so it will do. We are interested in something else – how to find the motivation in ourselves to act not from despair, but according to our own calculation . How to become better and take life in your own hands, even if you are already comfortable. This is why man is following a book on motivation, George.

Have you noticed that I have used the word “need” many times? The point is exactly what you really need at the moment. Maybe this is not at all what you think it is. In the next article we will analyze the most popular theories of motivation , how your needs are formed and find ways to apply this knowledge of life.

Today we came to the following conclusions:

  • Motivation is what moves you towards satisfying your desires and needs.
  • Motivation can come from the outside, from within, be positive or negative, be stable or unstable (requiring support).
  • Motivation in itself appears only in the presence of an acute need.
  • To act without urgent need, you need to make an effort.
